We had a fantastic dining experience! We ordered the pork shank for two, and it was incredibly tender and juicy. The sausage was also packed with flavor and perfectly seasoned. The portions were generous—so much so that we couldn’t finish the entire plate and ended up taking some home.Overall, we loved everything about the meal and the service. Highly recommend!

It is a great restaurant for traditional German Food. Everything is lovely prepared and a feast for the eyes. The food portions are plentiful. The ambience is cozy and authentic. The furnishings are rustic and Bavarian which fits in well with the Bavarian kitchen. The staff is friendly and helpful. You forget for a while that you are in America and almost want to order in German.I can recommend the Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle), the Wiener Schnitzel and the Schnitzel à la Holstein. If you are visiting this restaurant with several people, it is best to make a reservation.

This place is so iconic! Everything from the atmosphere to the side dishes blows me away every time I come. It is of course expensive as heck but so so so worth it—and honestly the amount of food you get and the quality and novelty is pretty worth the money. I always get the pork shank for two and it’s so good I could probably eat two of them.

You want to travel to Germany but you can’t? Just have a dinner here !Exterior, interior, and even staffs’ outfits, everything was very authentic (I’ve never visited Germany, sorry if you guys disagree with me ;)Nevertheless, sausage was awesome. We ordered creamed spinach on the side and it was a good match with sausage. As many people already know, schnitzel was also good. I personally loved the big chunk of mushrooms in the cream sauce.I am not a big fan of a beer, so the server recommended me a hot wine and hot apple cider. Both were tasty and perfect for cold weather, if you are not a beer fan just like me, try the wine or any drinks that staffs recommend. I think all of the staffs know the menus well, and plus they are super friendly.Love the fact that this place is in my neighborhood and definitely my go-to place !

Absolutely loved this place! One of the best German restaurant in Manhattan imho. Food and drinks, service, personal, atmosphere - everything is outstanding. We’ve ordered wheel of the camembert that was a great starter. Sausage platter and jagerschnitzel was delicious! But the nicest surprise was at the end. We’ve been suggested to try Black Haus schnapse with cherry chocolate cake. This was just WOW! This is a perfect combo. I’ve never thought that dessert can be so “die for…”! So grateful to the person who recommended it!

Simply exceptional, old-world German cuisine. Came here on a Bourdain-inspired food tour of New York and wasn’t disappointed. Fried cheese, cheesy German noodles with just the right amount of crispy bacon on the top? Perfection. Coupled with authentic schnitzel and (an enormous portion) of pork knuckle that’s beautifully crispy on the outside, tender delicious on the inside, this was the culinary highlight of our trip. A must eat stop in NYC, as long as you’re not a vegetarian that is.

I ordered their sausage platter for one which comes with three sausages: bratwurst, bauerwurst , and weisswirst. the dish also comes with potato salad, cabbage, and sauerkraut. i also ordered their gebackener camembert (breaded camembert cheese with sliced pear and cranberry sauce). i must begin by saying i’ve never been to a german restaurant and had simply stumbled upon this gem with a friend. everything tasted amazing. there is such a unique balance of flavors to every dish. the cheese was fragrant and delicious (not overly strong but a light creamy, milky flavor) that paired perfectly with the pear and cranberry giving the dish a creamy and sweet flavor profile. the sausages were all really good and paired perfectly with their potato salad, cabbage, and sauerkraut. each of the three sides gives a slightly different addition of flavor (salty, sweet, and sour/tartness). overall, i’d recommend coming here if you’re in the mood for german food (note: the meal overall was very filling and hearty)!

Definitely a solid place to go for German food. Great staff, excellent beers, and a good selection of food. The Schweinshaxe was excellent; the outside was perfectly crispy, the meat was extremely soft and juicy, and the bit of fat was the perfect texture and basically melts in your mouth. The food here is incredible and the service is great. I always love eating here. Knocked off one star because it seems they over-serve alcohol here. Was here alone and a very drunk woman randomly sat down at my table and would not get up. After much back and forth, I had to raise my voice to yell at her to leave my table before she finally got up and walked away. All she did was blankly stare and me and rock back and forth. Wasn’t sure if she was drunk or homeless until I later saw someone escorting her out. You wouldn’t have this problem if you didn’t over serve!

I ordered the pork shank ($39.75) on a day when a German soccer game was showing on their TV. The cheering from the diners was enthusiastic and very loud. The very large pork shank had a mild, pleasing flavor while it was hot, when it cooled off it was without taste. I took home what i couldnt finish. The pork shank came with a choice of two vegetables, I chose red cabbage and a dish of cucumbers (seen on the right hand side of my photo). I took home what I couldnt finish. On another visit there, I had the beef goulash (pictured), $27, which I thought was just okay. The beef had a small amount of flavor, most of the beefs flavor came from the sauce. The goulash came with a side dish of red cabbage. Lunch seatings are until 3 p.m. Dinner seatings are until 10 p.m. most days of the seven days they are open.

Sunday brunch time is the best time to crave some comfort German food. I have been here a couple of years before and I recall it to be excellent. Today, the excellence persisted when I re-visited with a friend.Leberknodelsuppe: two liver dumplings (actually dumpling shaped meat balls) in bone broth. Salty and umami, and not a lot of the organ taste to it. You can definitely taste the texture of the liver: a bit mushy like paste, with some blends of herbs. One dumpling is like thumb length and one bowl of liquid is really large. By the end, it leaves a bit of the saline aftertaste.Ochsenmausalat: marinated beef tongue on top of citrusy fresh salad and then topped with pickles. Refreshing refreshing refreshing. The tongues are thick-cuts and are still pink in color. The marinade really steeps into the meat and it is such a grease cutter despite it is beef tongue. The salad to tongue ratio is good to deliver major citrusy notes with hints of sweetness.Schweinsbaxe: the roasted pork shank is my go-to comfort food. The crispy skin with gelatinized collagen with part-tender-part-charred meat, what can I ask more for happiness. The pork itself doesn’t carry much flavor (besides its intrinsic subtle sweetness). I swapped the potato with the creamed spinach and with sauerkraut. Eating the shank with grained mustard and the sauerkraut is the key to keep on digging so you don’t get fat-saturated. Their creamed spinach is such a surprise item! Creamy and buttery and good to sneak in some veggies lol.Gebratene Ente: another my favorite item the roasted duckling with plum sauce! It was the item that left me hanging even after 2 years and it is even better than I remembered. The roasted duckling has a perfect layer of duck fat between its tender meat and crispy skin, which was glazed with plum sauce. You get duck flavor combined with hint of tangy and major sweet note and you also get the textural contrast between the skin, fat, and the meat. The sides were mashed potato ball and marinated cabbage. The cabbage was also marinated sweet, and was great to complement the dish to balance off the fat.The portions are typical German and they are huge, even after sharing. Didn’t have the stomach room for the dessert yet I see they have German chocolate cake there (wonder if they have Black Forest gateau but that’s for next time). They also have a daily special, the creamy mushroom porcini soup. Considering how great their creamed spinach, I am eager to try it next time during my mushroom season.Service is a little slow but that’s due to short on hands I think. They also have a secret back garden but it wasn’t open to dine in on the day I went. So sad, because the lighting inside of the restaurant is dark and Viking, yet outside is nice and shiny.

Just went there on a Friday around 7:00 after an afternoon at the Met with my wife and three kids (10, 8, and 6). Great atmosphere with wooden beams across the ceilings, authentic German decor, dimly lit with wooden tables and benches. We ordered the potato pancakes, gurkensalat (cucumber salad), and pretzel for our appetizers - the kids loved them, as did we. Everything was freshly made and delicious. For our entree, we got the pork shank (Schweinshaxe) that was a huge portion for one person, so my wife and I shared it. It was succulent with crispy skin on the outside and fall off the bone tender inside. It came with a generous portion of boiled potato slices and we substituted the sauerkraut for red cabbage. It was just delicious and again freshly prepared. I had a great half pint of the grapefruit beer, and my wife had some Reisling. Overall, would highly recommend it, it was crowded, but we were able to get a table after calling ahead. They dont take reservations on weekends.

My husband had been wanting to go here for a long time. We went for Saturday lunch yesterday. We walked indoors and found the atmosphere very old looking and dark. The place was empty. Only a couple tables and a couple people at bar. We were immediately seated. Waitress poured water and asked about drinks. Hubby ordered a beer he said was good. I asked about a sweet drink. Waitress brought me a taste of Riesling but it wasn’t sweet enough for me. That was the only right move she made during our stay. Hubby ordered a Holstein which he liked. I ordered a chicken cutlet sandwich without bacon. Waitress explained the bacon is pre mixed with sauerkraut so I asked for no sauerkraut as well. After a lengthy wait hubbys dish arrives perfect while mine had no sauerkraut but was laden with bacon bits. I asked hubby to try it to insure I saw / tasted bacon and he confirmed. I informed waitress who asks me “ how can that be?” I opened sandwich and showed her. I shouldn’t have been questioned. The chef should have been and it’s her job to insure correct plate served not question a customer. The plate had lovely garnishes salad and a pickle. She disappeared then returned many minutes later to tell me I can have another. I told her I’d just like a plain cutlet. That’s what I got. A slab of overcooked dry cutlet with nothing else on plate. No garnish salad pickle nothing. during our entire stay she never refilled water glasses. She never came over to ask my husband nor I how everything was. I saw another patron being served ice tea which to me is a sweet beverage. I was never offered this and by the time I saw it I was so disgusted I didn’t want to spend another cent at this place. I asked for a to go bag ( as I give poor people leftover food)and told my husband to give less than our usual 20 percent plus tip. Waitress was quick to bring dessert menu though. I wasn’t interested at this point. To top it off I was charged the same price for my slab of cutlet without anything on the plate as I was for the initial sandwich with all the fixings. That was inappropriate but we paid as I couldn’t wait to leave.Your staff needs more training on customer service and knowledge of what’s in each dish. A customer should never be questioned. The place needs light and updated atmosphere.I will not return. One of the worst nyc dining experiences I’ve had.I went to the German place next door and ordered a dish from their take out window which was excellent. Go there instead.Shame on you Heidelberg!

They also had pretty good home made hash browns as a side. I gave this dish a 4 star because it was far too bland for the price. Without the berry sauce the veal was as bland as a McDonalds chicken nugget..The sausage platter was good. The pork bratwurst was the best by far. The other two are so bland that not even a thorough drenching in mustard could save them. I didnt take more than 2 bites of each before I gave up. They were simply not worth the calories.

This one makes me sad. I was looking forward to having German food in the north but this did not match up. Food is mediocre. I walked in and thought it was a cute place. It was a little colder than what it shouldve been on a rainy/windy day or maybe it was bc they had the back door wide open for smokers or whatever. The server came by and I wasnt ready, it didnt take long before I was. 10/15 mins later, he comes back smelling like cigarettes (which Im allergic to) so you know he didnt wash his hands. He threw the alcohol menu in my face and I said no..he still continues to push it after i tolld him I dont drink. I order.. food comes and its ok... esp if servers keep trying to clear your table while youre still there and working on it. There was no way of finishing the meal with the bad service. I asked for a Togo container. Packed up.. server comes back and tries to push the desserts and I said no..he has the menu about 1.5/2 inches away from my face and apparently didnt like getting told no. I understand upsetting bht, dont be pushy about it. He then brings the payment machine and I havent even finished putting the food on the container. I asked I pay now? With a super confused look and he said said yes. 😐 I didnt leave a tip.. I grabbed my jacket and get 1 arm in before he comes back and says you didnt leave me a tip? And I said noHe proceeds to ask me why.. I told him I didnt feel comfortable telling him. He goes tell front of house & he comes back which I tell him all of this. He offers a lava cake (I dont eat chocolate) and then he offered something else. I really didnt want it but he insisted. This dessert was also over soggy. I dont recommend it.

German cuisine, I honestly didnt really consider it a thing. In my mind, Heidelberg was a place in ancient Germany and a restaurant in NYC history.I took a chance and decided to learn a bit more about this cuisine and I was pleasantly surprised!Firstly, warm and hospitable from the start and thanks to some ease on restrictions, indoor dining was available to my party. We got our temps checked and sat down and checked out the menu. Even though I needed much if it parsed I was able to find something(S) for my taste. And it was all delightful! The staff was helpful at every single turn and we had a full meal and serving off the spread of offerings.I will certainly be back again on an empty stomach!

Solid beer and pretzel experience. The pretzel was a good sharing size. Reasonably soft outside skin with a hot and soft interior. Drier than some, more like what you experience in Hamburg on a moistness scale. It would have been nice to have some cheese as well as many other places around offer. #PretzelTour score 6.5/10Potato pancakes were good as well. Sausage, I would probably get something different next time.Everyone in our party did get the toots afterward and we had those three in common (different drinks) so I would be wary of the pretzel, potato pancakes, and sausage combo.I would go back for the beer and pretzel.

Yikes. Not only did it take our waiter 10m to realize we were seated by the hostess, our food took about an hour to come out after we ordered. We ordered a pretzel and drinks to start, and it all came out with the entrees, despite asking about it multiple times. My teetotaler girlfriend ordered a non-alcoholic Bitburger and I ordered an alcoholic Andechs. When they came out, our waiter insisted the 0.5L stein was the Bitburger and the 0.25 glass was my Andechs. We were skeptical and asked him to be sure (he said he was), but shrugged it off. My girlfriend felt sick after a few sips of her actually alcoholic drink. Oops! We asked the waiter to just bring a bottle so we knew for sure it was non-alcoholic, which took another 10m. I finished the non-alcoholic beer, still not sure if it was my Andechs. After I finished, I asked for an Andechs and, lo and behold, a twin of my girlfriends original drink was delivered to me, confirming her original drink was alcoholic and I drank the Bitburger. After we complained, the waiter tried to mansplain that we were confused and insisted he didnt mess up. After a while of back and forth and denials, we just asked him to comp the (alcoholic) beer they charged us for that she didnt drink, and 10m later, they comped the wrong one. Needless to say, we were just happy to get out of there.Other than the horrendous service (though another waiter was on top of things between sightings of our actual waiter), the food was okay. For the price, its not nearly enough substance or at the quality level it should be. My $32 Wienerschnitzel was about 1mm of meat with lots of breading, and the goulash and Jägerschnitzel were small portions. The giant pretzel comes with a dollop of mustard.Honestly, Im normally a huge fan of German restaurants and am biased when reviewing because I want to like them, so it especially pains me to write a review like this. But if youre looking for a German-themed restaurant with good vibes, good food, and good beer, dont stop here. Youre probably better heading next door to Blume (Austrian), or even the Metzgerei a couple doors down.

This is a place that most serious German connoisseurs have always said is delicious, Im not sure if it has changed over the years but I was far from impressed. The portions were pathetic for the price even for NYC standards. Whenever I leave most German restaurants I feel super stuffed and content like I should...not with this place. Despite the pathetic portions the food really wasnt that good. I had the saurbraten which was tough and did not really have much flavor to it. The bread they served us while waiting for our entrees was a joke. The server we had was a nice guy, not super professional though. When we were done eating we decided to go sit at the bar for one last beer before we left and that bartender was an a$$h@!&!! Whenever i sit at a bar i lay money up on The bar, this guy took it upon himself to tip himself when I paid for our drinks w/o bringing me any change...I usually dont tip ten bucks for two drinks (come on). So I asked him for change and got an attitude...I definitely let him have it, I told him how presumptuous and rude that was of him to not give me change back, he definitely didnt want to hear that, I was honestly really wanted to slap this fool but whatever. The reason I gave this place three stars is that the food was ok, they have my favorite beers on tap, the decor is very old school German, and our server was a friendly guy(not the bartender). If this place was that good a time ago they really should get back to their roots and fire that j#$@off bartender!! If I could I would give them 2 1/2 stars not three. For entrees she had the goulash and I had the roast duck. Both were properly cooked, tender, and remarkably good as were the accompanying sauces, knudel and spaetzle. Again, large portions.
